CASE
(Career Acquisition Skills Enhancement)
Topic: Negotiation Skills
Program Description: Negotiation skills are
essential for today's engineer. They are a part of team communication and conflict
resolution, allow an individual to meet objectives while enabling others to meet theirs,
and help to navigate the career path of a professional. The proposed workshop will provide
students with an environment in which they can learn effective negotiation skills,
practice these skills in a safe environment, and receive advice from professionals on how
to improve their negotiation skills.
Approach: The number of attendees will be
limited in order to provide a higher quality workshop. Students who sign up prior to the
workshop will be guaranteed a seat and walk-ins are welcome if space permits. Students
will be provided written materials from the lecture portion of the conference.
During the first part of the workshop the speaker
will present a lecture on successful negotiation skills in the work place. There will be a
chance for the students to respond to the material and ask questions. The second part of
the workshop will include breaking the students into groups and staging workplace
scenarios in which negotiation skills will improve the outcome of the interactions.
Students will act out their rolls in the scene, giving each student a chance to practice
their newly acquired negotiation skills.
There will be snacks provided for breaks during
the workshop.
Time Frame: The workshop will be from 1:00
to 5:00 p.m., permitting two hours for the lecture, a fifteen minute break, and an hour
and forty five minutes for practicing negotiation skills.
Intended Outcome: The anticipated outcome
of this project is that the students will have the opportunity to improve their
negotiation skills and therefore improve their interpersonal skills, skills that are
essential for success in today's work environment.
Milestones: The S-PAVe committee, which
consists of 4 IEEE student members, will have the following tasks:
1) Find a communications professional to conduct
the workshop
2) Solicit funding to support the cost of hiring
the communications expert, refreshments and advertisement.
