JAWS
(Job Acquisition Workshops)

Topic: Mock Interviews

Program Description: A strong first impression and successful interviewing skills are essential for the engineering student who is entering into the job market. The proposed workshop will provide students with an environment in which they can practice interviewing and receive helpful advice from professionals on how to improve their interview skills.

Approach: The students will be required to sign up for a time slot one week before the workshop. Students will be provided free access to photocopying so that they can duplicate their resumes.

The professional will interview the student and provide feedback during a time slot. Refreshments will be provided during the workshop. Dinner will be provided for the professionals after the workshop, at which time they will be able to provide feedback and suggestions to the student officers for future workshops.

Time Frame: The workshop will be from 1:00 to 5:00 pm, during which time each professional will have eleven 20 minute time slots plus one 20 minute break.

Intended Outcome: The anticipated outcome of this project is that the students will be exposed to a real interview situation and leave it with the confidence they need to interview for the job they want. In addition, the committee will have good feedback from the professionals regarding how the workshop went, and suggestions for the future.

Milestones: The JAWS committee, which consists of 4 IEEE student members, will have the following tasks:

1) Find at least 3 professionals to participate in the workshop.

2) Solicit funding to support copy and advertising costs, refreshments and dinner for the professionals.

3) Reserve 3 rooms for and a place for breaks/refreshments.

4) Advertise the workshop beginning a month in advance.

5) Provide a sign up sheet for students to register for the workshop at least a week in advance.

6) Run the workshop. Provide refreshment during the workshop.

7) Take the professionals to dinner and receive feedback and suggestions for future workshops.

8) Submit budget form and final report to SAC committee.
