IEEE Launches Smart Grid Portal:
On Jan. 19, IEEE launched the its Smart Grid Web Portal, an integrated gateway to Smart Grid intelligence, education and news designed for manufacturers, policymakers, educators, academics, governments, engineers, computer scientists, researchers and other stakeholders in the power and energy, information technology (IT), and communications industries.  more
NIST Smart Grid Twiki:
The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has primary responsibility to coordinate development of a framework that includes protocols and model standards for information management to achieve interoperability of smart grid devices and systems. NIST has developed an open collaboration site for the Smart Grid (SG) community to work with NIST in developing this framework. more
Video: A Smart Grid for Intelligent Energy Use
Our future is in the smart grid that will enable consumers to save money by controlling their use of energy. The IEEE-USA and IEEE Power Engineering society developed this 8-minute video, "A Smart Grid for Intelligent Energy Use," that explains the smart grid and its importance for reducing our carbon footprint.

Mission Statement
The Energy
Policy Committee is a committee of the Institute of
Electrical and Electronics Engineers-United States of
America (IEEE-USA). The overall objective of the Energy
Policy Committee is to assist in the resolution of energy
problems through the provision of rational, sound, technical
and professional counsel based upon the best resources which
the IEEE is competent to bring to bear upon these problems
in the United States. A major portion of the efforts
of the Energy Policy Committee will be directed towards the
energy-related activities of the legislative and executive
branches at all levels of the United States government.
The Energy
Policy Committee may address all aspects of the United
States, regional, state, or local energy situation where the
engineering knowledge and skills of IEEE members can make a
constructive contribution. The Committee may provide a
vehicle for presenting the sound technical views of the IEEE
to the public and appropriate elements of government. The
Energy Policy Committee will prepare and present positions
in accordance with IEEE-USA procedures on any aspect of
governmental energy policy within the technical and
professional competence of the IEEE. The Energy Policy
Committee will work to provide to the IEEE-USA membership
balanced, technically sound information on energy related
matters.
IEEE-USA Co-Sponsors Congressional Briefing on Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicles
On 10 July, IEEE-USA co-sponsored a forum on Capitol Hill to discuss the emerging technology of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles and the role they can play in reducing the nation's gasoline usage and dependence on foreign oil. Dr. Paul Werbos, Program Director, National Science Foundation, spoke on "Towards Independence from Imported Oil," and Dr. Thomas Schneider, Energy Consultant, addressed "Transportation Efficiency Through Electric Drive and the Power Grid."

Participation
The Energy
Policy Committee (EPC) invites IEEE U.S. members who have an
interest in energy policy coupled with expertise in
energy issues and who are willing to be active contributors
to the committee's activities to join the committee as an
Internet Corresponding Member. As an ICM, you will be
invited to recommend committee activities, comment on draft
position statements and testimonies, and otherwise
participate in the business of the committee. To become an
