20 September 2002 Dr. Elias Zerhouni Dear Dr. Zerhouni: On behalf of the
235,000 electrical, electronics, computer and software engineers who are
members of The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers-United
States of America (IEEE-USA), we would like to encourage you to use and
appoint engineers to commissions, committees and other advisory bodies to
assist with the consideration of and recommendations involving health care
technologies. Attached is the
IEEE-USA position statement, U.S. Government Advisory Entities Concerned
With Health-Related Issues, which was recently approved by our Board. As stated in the
position, IEEE-USA supports Government promoting a Standardized consistent
strategy for the evaluation and implementation of new and evolving
technologies. To effectively accomplish this, we recommend that whenever
the mission includes health care technology, that the selection process
strategy for membership on U.S. government commissions, committees and
advisory panels, include consideration of engineers with a biomedical,
telecommunications and health care background. We would be delighted
to work with you on increasing the participation of engineers. If we
can be of further assistance to you, please feel free to contact Deborah
Rudolph, Manager of Technology Policy, at our Washington DC office at 202
785-0017 x 8332. Sincerely, LeEarl A. Bryant, P.E. Same letter
