       Building Careers and Shaping Public Policy

9 October 2001

The Honorable Ernest F. Hollings
Chairman, Committee on Commerce, Science and Transporation
U.S. Senate
Washington, DC 20510

Dear Chairman Hollings;

I am writing on behalf of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc. - United States of America (IEEE-USA) to join our colleagues in the science and engineering community in urging the confirmation of Dr. John H. Marburger as Director of the Office of Science and Technology Policy and as Assistant to the President for Science and Technology.

Dr. Marburger has outstanding technical and management qualifications, as well as strong ties to industry, academia and government derived from his service as director of the Brookhaven National Laboratory, as president of Brookhaven Science Associates, and as past president (and a professor) of the State University of New York at Stony Brook. With a B.A. in physics from Princeton and a Ph.D. in Applied Physics from Stanford University, his background spans the fields of science, engineering, and technology. We believe this breadth of experience will not only make Dr. Marburger invaluable to the President as a science advisor, but would also assist him in drawing upon the help and resources of the science and engineering community in support of national science and technology goals.

Thank you for your consideration of our views.

Sincerely,

Ned R. Sauthoff, Ph.D.
2001 IEEE-USA President

(Similar letter sent to entire Senate on 11 Oct. 2001)
