06 June 2001 The Honorable Ted Kennedy Dear Mr. Chairman: The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers-United States of America (IEEE-USA), an organizational unit of the IEEE that promotes the careers and public-policy interests of the more than 230,000 electrical, electronics, computer and software engineers, is a strong advocate for the introduction of ethics principles for public health and medical services information placed on the World Wide Web (Internet). We are sending this letter to you, with the support of our volunteer Medical Technology Policy Committee (MTPC) membership, with several currently available ethics documents developed by the Hi-Ethics, Internet Healthcare Coalition, and the American Medical Association (AMA) so that you are aware of the excellent work by these communities. We wish to alert you to the medical and healthcare ethics activities underway and the Ethics and Internet Healthcare Coalition's activities for your consideration when formulating future legislative actions in this vital area of public interest. IEEE-USA applauds the efforts of Hi-Ethics and the Internet Healthcare Coalition and wish to state our support for these efforts as well as for the efforts of the AMA for their development of medical and healthcare information guidelines. If you have any questions or would like further information concerning our position on the merits of these ethics documents, please contact Deborah Rudolph, IEEE-USA Manager of Technology Policy, at (202) 785-0017 x 8332.
