Dear Sirs:

On behalf of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers-United States of America (IEEE-USA), I would like to thank you for scheduling the upcoming hearing on March 1, 2001 entitled, "The Nation's Energy Future: Role of Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency." We feel that this topic is timely and vitally important to America’s electrical energy needs.

As a non-profit, non-partisan professional organization representing 230,000 electrical, electronic and computer engineers throughout the United States, we feel that IEEE-USA is in a unique position to provide expert, experienced, and objective analysis of the status of the electrical infrastructure in this country.

Accordingly, we request that you include in the records for the above hearing the attached policy statements developed by IEEE-USA’s Energy Policy Committee entitled, "Energy Efficiency Policy," and "Solar and Renewable Electricity," that we feel are pertinent to the ongoing electrical energy discussion.

Again, thank you for holding the hearings and for consideration of our statements for the record. If you have any questions or we can be of further assistance, please call our Energy Technical Policy Representative Bill Williams at (202) 785-0017 ext. 8331.

Sincerely,

Ned. R. Sauthoff, Ph.D.
President, IEEE-USA
