22 February 2001 The Honorable George W. Bush Dear President Bush: I am writing on behalf of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers - United States of America (IEEE-USA) to congratulate you on your election and to offer our assistance to you and your administration in the days and years ahead. As a professional association with nearly 360,000 members world-wide, IEEE works to promote the engineering process of creating, developing, integrating and applying knowledge about electrical and information technologies for the benefit of humanity and the profession. IEEE-USA was created specifically to serve the nearly 230,000 electrical, electronics and computer engineers who are U.S. members of the IEEE. One of our primary roles is to provide authoritative engineering perspectives to government decision-makers on issues that affect the public's quality of life --- from the opportunities and impacts of electro- and information technologies to the issues affecting the health of the engineering profession. We believe that engineers can play an important role in helping policy-makers grapple with the technical implications of complex issues such as assuring the reliability of our power supply in a restructured electricity industry, preparing for the increasing convergence of communications and information technologies, and ensuring that national research and development investments help drive the technological innovation needed to sustain our economic prosperity. I have enclosed a copy of our legislative agenda for 2001. As you can see, issues of U.S. technological and industrial prominence are of great concern to us. We would very much like to work with your Administration on these issues and can offer the expertise of our members and staff to assist you. We would be pleased to help identify qualified candidates for federal appointment, provide experts to serve on federal advisory committees, organize workshops and symposia to focus attention on key S&T topics of concern to your Administration, provide briefings and background information, and/or do whatever we can to be of assistance. Please contact Chris Brantley, IEEE-USA's Director of Government Relations, at 202-785-0017 if we can be of any service. Sincerely, Ned R.
