Building Careers and Shaping Public Policy

12 April 2001

Chief of Staff
Office of the Director
United States Patent Office
Washington, DC 20231

IEEE-USA represents a quarter-million engineers, many of whom interact with the USPTO and hold important US patents. IEEE-USA, through its Intellectual Property Committee, has met frequently with the management of the USPTO to assist them as needed. We would be pleased to continue that relationship by providing one of our leaders who is experienced with patents and patent prosecution for the Patent Public Advisory Committee. Accordingly, we nominate Dr. Lee Hollaar for a position on this important committee.

Professor Lee A. Hollaar is the current chair of our Intellectual Property Committee, and was nominated for the Patent Public Advisory Committee by IEEE-USA and the National Association of Patent Practitioners. He is a professor of computer science in the University of Utah's School of Computing, where he teaches a course in intellectual property law for engineering students as well as technical courses. He is very familiar with the operation of the USPTO, both as a registered patent agent and, while on sabbatical, a committee fellow with the Senate Committee on the Judiciary, where he worked on the patent reform legislation in the 105th Congress.

Please find attached Dr. Hollaar's curriculum vitae. If you need more information, or we can be of further assistance, please don't hesitate to call at 202-785-0017. Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely,

Ned R. Sauthoff, Ph.D.
President

Encl.
