Washington Internships for Students of Engineering

IEEE Welcomes the
2010 WISE Interns

Kristie Chin
Brown University

Kristie is an IEEE student member scheduled to graduate in May 2011 with dual civil engineering and architectural studies degrees.

Her special interest areas include long-term space habitats, biomimicry, renewable energy resources, and sustainable design.

She is a member of Engineers Without Borders, starting pitcher for the varsity softball team, secretary of Brown's Student Athletic Advisory Committee, and LEED AP (BD+C) certified.

Levi Lyons
University of Kansas

Levi is a junior majoring in electrical engineering and accounting. His long-range goals include a future involving renewable energy and one day planning to own an engineering firm. Last summer, Levi interned with the United States Army Corps of Engineers. During his internship he was able to work with leaders in the hydropower industry and saw the direct impact of public policy on generation and transmission of electricity. This led him to apply for the WISE program in hopes of learning more about the affects of public policy in the context of science.

Levi has learned the value of teamwork while serving as chairman of University of Kansas student branch of the IEEE. As an engineering ambassador, he helps recruit students to KU’s engineering program. Levi is also a member of Tau Beta Pi and Eta Kappa Nu engineering honor societies and has volunteered in Big Brothers Big Sisters over the last three years.

Each year, seven professional engineering societies select outstanding engineering students to spend nine weeks in Washington, D.C., learning about the public policy process, including how government officials make decisions on complex technological issues and how engineers can contribute to legislative and regulatory public policy decisions.  The WISE Program is ranked as one of the best Internship opportunities in the U.S. by the Princeton Review.

IEEE-USA, IEEE Technical Activities and the IEEE Life Members Committee partner to support IEEE's participation in the WISE program.   Interns are hosted in the IEEE-USA Washington office.

The 2010 WISE Program kicks off on June 7.
