On 10-11 May,
IEEE-USA volunteers traveled to Washington, D.C., to
participate in the 10th Annual
Science
Engineering Technology Congressional Visits Day (CVD). The
25 IEEE members joined more than 200 U.S. scientists,
engineers and business leaders representing
scientific and engineering societies, higher education associations, institutions of higher learning, and trade associations
to communicate directly with
legislators and deliver their core message about the
importance of federally funded R&D.
IEEE-USA members visited the following members on Capitol Hill:

President Gerry Alphonse (right) presented the George E.
Brown Award to Rep. Vern Ehlers of Michigan for his
untiring support for research and development project
funding in the U.S. Senator Jeff Bingaman was also awarded
the George E. Brown Award.
Making the day even more interesting for all participants was the evacuation of the Capitol Hill offices. When a small aircraft accidentally flew into restricted airspace near downtown D.C., the White House, and House and Senate buildings were evacuated. The interruption did not however, hinder the efforts of the CVD. All meetings resumed as scheduled once it was safe to go back inside.
