IEEE-USA President to Speak at Dedication
of Tennessee Engineering Center

WASHINGTON (26 July 2002) — IEEE-USA President LeEarl Bryant will be in Nashville to speak at the dedication of the Tennessee Engineering Center (TEC) on Tuesday, 30 July and present the center with a check for $1,000.

The TEC, a $1.8 million addition to the Cumberland Science Museum, will benefit both business and educational interests. Features include a hands-on exhibit for children demonstrating practical applications of science and technology, and a conference center meeting room with the latest multimedia capabilities.

IEEE Central Tennessee Section member Bill Sims was honored earlier this year by IEEE-USA with a regional professional leadership award for his fundraising efforts that allowed the IEEE to become one of the center's six founding engineering societies.

"The purpose of the Tennessee Engineering Center is to raise the excellence of engineering," Sims said, "and to encourage children who come to the museum to go into the engineering profession."

Bryant is also slated to visit the new engineering facility at Vanderbilt University, and meet with Dave Condra, president of the Nashville Technology Council. She will speak on the future of IEEE-USA at the Vanderbilt University Club on Wednesday, 31 July.

Joining the IEEE as a TEC founding member are the Tennessee Society of Professional Engineers, the Consulting Engineers of Tennessee, the American Society of Civil Engineers, the Society of American Military Engineers and the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Engineers.

The Cumberland Science Museum was founded in 1944 as the Nashville Children's Museum. It addresses public literacy and knowledge of technological ideas, and stimulates children's interest in science and engineering careers.

IEEE-USA is an organizational unit of The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers created in 1973 to promote the careers and public-policy interests of the more than 235,000 electrical, electronics, computer and software engineers who are U.S. members of the IEEE. The IEEE is the world's largest technical professional society. For more information, go to http://www.ieeeusa.org.
