IEEE-USA Salary Survey Reveals
Median Income Tops $90,000

WASHINGTON (2 July 2001) - Median primary income for U.S. IEEE members working as electrotechnology and information-technology professionals is $93,100, the IEEE-USA Salary & Fringe Benefit Survey, 2001 Edition reports. This represents an increase of 13.5 percent over the $82,000 figure established by the most recent survey in 1999. It is just one of the major findings of the nation's pre-eminent salary survey for technical professionals.

The increase in base pay, commissions and bonuses, and any net income from self-employment (median primary income) applies to those working full-time in their professional area of technical competence. When earnings from second jobs, payments for overtime, pension benefits and the like are counted, the median jumps to $99,000, another 13.5 percent increase in absolute (not constant) dollars. On top of the gains reported in 1999, the purchasing power of U.S. IEEE members has risen more than 18 percent in the past four years.

This year's survey was conducted online for the first time, resulting in a near doubling of respondents to more than 9,500. As the biggest and most accurate measure of member compensation ever conducted by IEEE-USA, the report provides many details not reported in the past.

The exhaustive survey report contains 64 pages of charts and explanatory text. It provides the latest statistics to help users consider prospective jobs and negotiate salaries and benefits. Cross tabulations of income data are included in areas such as age, gender, experience, industry, technical experience and geographical location.

In addition to the survey, an online salary calculator will be available soon for a nominal cost through the IEEE-USA Web site at http://www.ieeeusa.org. This personal salary estimator replaces Salary Benchmarks: A Personal Workbook, and will make it easier than ever for technical professionals to assess their market value.

The IEEE-USA Salary & Fringe Benefit Survey, 2001 Edition can be ordered now by IEEE members for US$74.95 or nonmembers for US$149.95 To order, call +1 800 678 IEEE (4333) and ask for product number UH-2990, or go to http://www.ieeeusa.org/catalog/01salary.html for more information and to order online.
