Become a 2008 IEEE-USA Mass Media Fellow: Help
Promote Technological Literacy
If you're a senior in college or graduate
student and are interested in sharing technical
information with the public, consider becoming
an
IEEE-USA Mass Media Fellow. Administered by
the AAAS, the fellowship program helps
strengthen connections between engineers and
journalists, as well as increase public
understanding and awareness of science,
engineering and technology. The deadline for
applications is Tuesday, 15 January 2008. For
more information on the program and to apply, go

IEEE-Technology-Related News Stories Aired in
More Than Two-Dozen U.S. TV Markets
Beginning in 2005, in collaboration with the
American Institute of Physics (AIP) and other
technical professional organizations, IEEE-USA
has helped to underwrite almost 300 local TV
news stories on engineering and science. Since
January 2006, more than two-dozen stories about
IEEE-related technologies aired in 23 different
U.S. TV markets, including New York, Chicago,
Philadelphia, San Francisco, Tampa-St.
Petersburg, Phoenix and Miami. Recent IEEE

IEEE/IEEE-USA Reaching Out to Younger, Older
Audiences to Promote Engineering Awareness
The IEEE is reaching out to two different
segments of the public — from
nine-to-13-year-olds and to adults — in its
quest to promote the understanding of engineers
and engineering, as well as to encourage
technological literacy. For the third
consecutive year, IEEE-USA is underwriting the
American Institute of Physics (AIP) "Discoveries
& Breakthroughs" TV news spots. In addition, for
the first time, the IEEE is a cosponsor of a new
PBS TV series, the engineering-based reality
program, "Design Squad," which has now aired its
first 13 programs.

Communications Programs
IEEE-USA's Communications programs strive to
keep the IEEE's U.S. members informed of the
organization's accomplishments and services, and
to raise awareness among members and the general
public of issues affecting technology
professionals' careers.
Publications
IEEE-USA communicates its messages to every U.S.
member through its primary print and online
publications: the quarterly print IEEE-USA
Today's Engineer Digest, monthly IEEE-USA Today's
Engineer Online, and the monthly
IEEE-USA Today's Engineer E-mail Update.
Public Relations
IEEE-USA coordinates responses to media
inquiries regarding career and public policy
issues affecting U.S. IEEE members. IEEE-USA
volunteers have been quoted in such publications
as The New York Times, the Wall Street
Journal and The Washington Post; and
appeared on such television programs as CNN's
Lou Dobbs Tonight and Next@CNN.
Public Awareness, Outreach
IEEE-USA communicates to the public how U.S.
IEEE members and technical professionals improve
the quality of life in the United States and in
their local communities; and how U.S. IEEE
members and technical professionals promote
diversity and ethical behavior in the
profession. Each year, IEEE-USA sponsors student
members in the AAAS Science & Engineering Mass
Media Fellows program. And IEEE-USA supports
collaborative outreach and awareness programs
such as Engineers Week (EWeek).
