Engineers and Public Policy
4 December 2008
Overview

There are about 215,000 IEEE members in the United States. Politically speaking, this is a huge number, especially since engineers vote more frequently than the average American. Yet engineers are rarely consulted in political decisions. Why is that?

This webinar discusses the role engineers play in the political process and ways for us to do a better job at it. When they try, engineers can have a profound effect on legislation and our nation's laws. The problem is we rarely try.

About the Presenter

Russell Harrison is the Senior Legislative Representative for Grassroots Activities for IEEE-USA. He is responsible for helping IEEE members in the U.S. interact with, and ultimately influence, elected officials.

Prior to IEEE-USA, Harrison directed grassroots programs at the Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries and the American Iron and Steel Institute. In these positions he represented the recycling and steel industries on Capitol Hill and in state capitols on a variety of issues as grassroots and professional lobbyist.

He has a BA in Political Science, with minors in History and Communications, from Allegheny College, and a Masters in Public Policy from the University of Maryland.
