Robert Greene Sterne is a founding director of Sterne, Kessler, Goldstein & Fox PLLC. Mr. Sterne is recognized as a thought leader on the law of obviousness and corporate IP best practices. He specializes in the areas of intellectual property for cutting-edge technologies in the electronics and computer arenas, the monetization of patents, patent litigation and patent licensing. Mr. Sterne is well known for his work across a number of technology spaces, including hardware, software, bioinformatics, wireless, computer architecture, analogue electronics, semiconductors, medical devices and business method patents.

Mr. Sterne is also one of the leading patent attorneys in patent re-examination and concurrent patent litigation in the United States. He is the author of many articles, webcasts and interviews on the topic, and is a frequent speaker on this topic at recognized venues. He has been the lead attorney for some of the most significant re-examinations. He serves as chair of the editorial board of The Reexamination Center (www.reexamcenter.com), the leading website on patent re-examination.

Clients rely on Mr. Sterne's negotiation skills and big-picture approach to patent procurement and protection, and he is a sought-after expert witness. Mr. Sterne has served as a special master for Judge Marvin J Garbis in a case involving patent inventorship, patent ownership, US and foreign patent applications and prosecution, and a failed joint technology venture. Mr. Sterne is internationally recognized as an expert on software and business method patents, having been the lead attorney for IBM in the Federal Circuit test case In re Beauregard (1995), which led to the US Patent and Trademark Office Software Patent Guidelines. He also served as the lead patent lawyer for Teleflex at the US Supreme Court in KSR v Teleflex (2007), which led to the current legal test for patent obviousness. Mr. Sterne is an electrical engineer by training, holding BSEE and MS degrees from Tufts University, as well as a JD from the University of Maryland Law School.
