Engineers Week Highlights (17-23 Feb. 2008)
Each year, IEEE-USA supports a number of
activities in conjunction with
Engineers Week,
the annual celebration of engineering and their
contributions to society. 2008 highlights
include:
More than 7,500 people – mostly elementary
school children and their parents – attended the
Discover Engineering
Family Day festival at the National
Building Museum to kick off Engineers Week
activities in the Washington area. The
attendance was the second-highest in Family Day
history. IEEE-USA, a major event sponsor, gave
away calculators and flying discs. Local IEEE
members gave hands-on presentations to help
explain electrical principles. Interested
children received a breadboard project kit to
take home.

Devices, LLC on his Atlas powered rope ascender.
IEEE-USA President Russ Lefevre participated in
an "Engineering Your Life" event at the National
Academies designed to promote engineering
careers to high school girls. The IEEE helps to
fund the “Engineer Your Life” program through
its participation in the United Engineering
Foundation.

National Academy of Engineering awards
presentation at Union Station, where the
half-million dollar Draper and Gordon Awards
were presented to honor outstanding achievements
in engineering and in engineering education.

judged the IEEE-USA Best Communications System
Award during the National Finals of the
Future City
Competition. The Future City event, which
IEEE-USA introduced to Engineers Week in 1993,
is designed to help interest middle-school
students in engineering careers. Harding Middle
School of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, won the award for
the most “efficient and accurate communications
system.”
On Feb 21, IEEE-USA President Russell Lefevre

Engineering Profession."
Congress
recognized engineers
and their contributions to society with a EWeek Resolution,
which pledged "to make sure that the
creativity and contribution of that community can be
expressed through research, development, standardization,
and innovation."
