IV. 20 min PRODUCT & SERVICES UPDATE
  A. CareerNavigator

The Committee discussed and reviewed the success of the CareerNavigator.  Scott Grayson noted that many members continue to provide favorable comments regarding the website. They find it is comprehensive.

  B. ECS Virtual Community

Scott Grayson reported that the ECS Virtual Community is one of the most active of all IEEE Communities. It currently has 2,400 users and over 2,100 postings.  Users post hard to find job openings and assist recently graduated students and unemployed members.

  C. EmploymentNavigator & CareerStar

Scott reported that during the Hurricanes, IEEE-USA was able to negotiate a special deal with Spherion to offer CareerStar to the Hurricane Impacted IEEE members.

Scott also reported that he and Chris Currie will be negotiating a new deal with Spherion to hopefully provide members with CareerStar at a reasonable monthly rate.

  D. Career Planning Guide

Committee agreed to publish the Career Planning Guide as an eBook.

  E. Beyond Job Satisfaction Fieldbook Update

Scott reported that those that have purchased the Fieldbook have found it very useful.  However, the book has not been marketed as as extensively as it should have been. Increased efforts to market this workbook in 2006 are underway.

  F. Products & Services Brochure

Scott distributed the new Career Products & Services Brochure.

  G. Professional Development On-Line Workshops

Scott reported that we have 29 on-line professional development (developed by Achieve Global) workshops that are now live.

  H. eBooks (Grayson)
  1. Career Planning Guide
It was decided that the Career Planning Guide will be published as an eBook.

  2. Careers Conference Articles

Chuck Elliott reviewed past careers conference proceedings and selected a few that were still applicable.  These could be turned into eBooks.

Joe DeVita will look into the cost of having these article optically scanned.

     3.  Professional Guidelines  (Please Read Before Meeting)

The Committee decided not publish the guidelines as an eBook. They reviewed the content and felt that it did not need an update at this time.

V.30 min IEEE-Wide Career & Professional Development Activities

    1.  IEEE Careers Committee & Charter Revision: Jean Eason reported that an IEEE Careers Committee has been established to coordinate career and employment efforts within the entire Institute.  Jean recommended amending the ECSC Charter to include the IEEE-USA Representative on the IEEE Committee.  Scott will send out the charter amendment by March 24, 2006.  If he does not hear back from committee members by March 31, 2006, he will proceed with moving the amendment forward to the IEEE-USA OpCom agenda.

     2.   Liaison with IEEE-USA Career Workforce Policy Committee: Tarek reported that CWPC is running Career Workshops.  Vice President Member Activities, Gregg Vaughn expressed some concern about the overlapping activities between CWPC and ECS.  He will discuss this issue with Ron Hira, Vice President of Career Activities. It was agreed that the bottom line is that everyone wants to provide services to members.  Both Committees will try to figure out how to best work together to this end.

    3.     Job Fairs: Ed Perkins reported on the Pacific NWTech Job Fair.  No fee for job seekers.  More information can be found at: http://www.pacificnwtech.org/.

     4.    Discussions with Region 7 (Canada):  Scott reported that he and President Wyndrum had discussions with Region 7.  They are interested in providing their members with some of our career & employment products and services. Scott will continue to work with Region 7 and update the committee on any activity.

      5.    IEEE-USA "Annual" Meeting

Scott reported that next year's IEEE-USA Leadership Workshop will be called the Annual Meeting.

VI. 30 min Survey Update
  1. Salary Survey, Database & Calculator

Chris Currie reported on the history and evolution of the Salary Survey.  He also provided the committee  (See Memo From Chris Currie).  Chris Currie noted that Sales have not been as great as expected.  The committee discussed whether to continue to make enhancements to the product which would cost additional money; just providing the salary calculator to members or provide the salary calculator and a slightly enhanced service to employers.

The committee decided that there was no need at this time to enhance the product any further until we begin to generate more revenue. The committee also agreed to keep the salary survey and calculator since it has been deemed to be a very valuable member service.  See 2006 Action Plan for more details.

       2.    Career Services Survey Report & Responses:

Peggy Hutcheson reported on the Career Services Survey.  The committee discussed the findings and incorporated them into their project planning for 2006.  The following areas were of highest importance to members who were surveyed:

  • Finding a job for which they have the appropriate skills and experience
  • Knowing and developing the skills for the future
  • Developing resources to help them grow professionally
  • Increasing skills in decision-making
  • Worklife Balance
  • Building a personal network
  • Better understand what will bring them job satisfaction

Other findings:

  • The Salary Survey was the highest rated product.
  • The most frequent response was that members were not aware of career, employment and professional development products and services.

      3.    Member Survey Report:

Scott Grayson reported that President Wyndrum commissioned a survey of U.S. members assessing the membership value proposition.  Both the ECS survey and the IEEE-USA membership Value survey highlighted the fact that members are not aware of our many of our products and services.  Scott noted that members said they would prefer to pay less for the same amount of offering but did not want to pay more for more offereings.  Some stated that they wanted to pay less for more.
